I got to know a group of Singapore businessmen on the Bali-Timor Leste flight.
Glad to meet a fellow countryman in a strange land, they invited me to join them
on a visit to the old Portuguese coffee plantations in the highlands of Timor.
Access was only via 4WD across muddy mountain tracks, to a region long abandoned
by history and the modern economy. These Singaporeans, together with their
Chinese Timorese partners, intend to revive the fortunes of Timor's most
important product - high quality organic coffee, and also to initiate a whole
series of charitable and community projects in this land devastated by conflicts
and economic ruin.
