A lawyer and freethinker, a bohemian, an alcoholic and an eternally indomitable spirit, Preseren brought Slovene poetry all the principle classical poetic forms ; he spiritually kindled the subalpine province with the fighting spirit of the European Romantics and thus, just as the great Romantics in other Slavic lands, articulated the national consciousness. A century and a half after its creation, his "Zdravljica" (The Toast) has become the national anthem of the Slovene State.
Extracts of The Toast :
God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway ;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.
